A BRIEF HISTORY OF LOCKSMITHS

The oldest known lock discovered was found in ancient Egypt, and it dates back 4,000 years ago. This lock was very similar to our pin tumbler locks except of course it was made out of wood. However, they worked the same way our modern-day locks worked. These types of locks were also discovered in ancient Babylon, mentioned in the Bible, and locks were believed to have spread to ancient Greece and Rome, as well as China.

The design of locks did not change much. They were made with wood and were mainly utilized by the noble classes to lock their valuables up to prevent theft. Around 900 AD, locks began to be made of metal in England, which of course are longer-lasting and stronger. As the craftsman took root with guilds in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, metal workers took locks to the level of art with beautiful designs that the nobility requested.

It wasn’t until the 18th century that the design of locks took on a modern feel and became what we know today. This is largely due to the fact that humans simply did not have the tools to make a more complicated lock before the Industrial Revolution.

With the change in the types of locks and the ability to mass produce them, locksmiths began to broaden their services, adding such locksmith services as rekeying, replicating, and even making keys. Still today, some locksmiths are highly specialized in their locksmith services
