Welcome back to our blog page here at Buckeye Locksmith! This winter, we’re definitely staying busy as we expand our service areas more every month. Here in Grove City and the Columbus metro area, as the temperatures drop, we know that it’s more important than ever to get you out of the elements and back into your car or home. The weather could definitely create dangerous situations for people who are locked out, and for that reason, we take our job very seriously.

There is perhaps, nothing more frustrating and life-interrupting than getting locked out of your house. Of course, if you’re anything like us, you might immediately feel ridiculous for making such a mistake. But the truth is that everyone gets locked out at some point, and when that does happen to you, we want to make sure that we’re there for you. Let’s first talk about some of the most common reasons that people get locked out of their Grove City homes.

  • Being Distracted: When you feel like you’ve got a million things going on, getting locked out of your house can easily happen. We’ve all been there: you’re on the phone with the utility company, you’re late for work, and at the last second, you remember that it’s trash day, so you rush outside to take the garbage down to the street. And when you try to open your doorknob, you realize the worst has occurred.
  • Misplaced Keys: When you’re so used to keeping your keys in your purse, it’s easy to walk out the door with all the confidence in the world, only to realize that your keys aren’t in their usual place. This, of course, is extremely frustrating.
  • Residential Lockout: Let’s face it, sometimes you get locked out and it was completely outside of your control. If you have a roommate, live with your parents, or are in a similar situation, it’s possible that, at some point, a miscommunication could lead to one of you being locked out of your shared dwelling.

Now that we’ve discussed some of the most common reasons to be locked out, let’s look at some great solutions to being locked out! Before your frustrating lockout happens, there are some measures that you can take to try and avoid this annoying occurrence.

  • Give a key to a trustworthy friend, family member, or neighbor.

  • Keep an extra house key in your purse or briefcase.

  • Find a great key-hiding fake rock that will blend well into your flower bed or garden.

  • Make sure that you have keyless access to your garage and hide a key inside your garage.

Because the key to your home shouldn’t be found by potentially dangerous people, you’ll want to make sure that you’re smart when you choose the right hiding place for your key. Some places to avoid hiding your key are the following:

  • Under the porch mat; this will be the first place an intruder will look

  • In the mailbox; this too is an obvious hiding place

  • Under a flower pot; this is risky because the pot can easily move or shift

  • On a window ledge; the key hidden here might actually be visible to a potential intruder

  • Above the door frame; this again is too obvious

Since all of the above-mentioned ideas are preventative, the information won’t do you much good after you are locked out of your Grove City home. When you are faced with being locked out and you know that you don’t have direct access to the keys, it’s time to call a locksmith.
